Meet the Owner

Jan Marie Laman, classical guitar teacher
B.M. Music Education 2021

My name is Jan Marie Laman and I am the owner of Laman School of Music. I am a classically trained guitarist and I provide students in Loudoun County, Virginia with the knowledge they need to become a true musician; someone who understands, and is proficient in their instrument, their musicality, and the history behind the pieces they play. I grew up in Loudoun County, where classical guitar is growing year by year! I am blessed to be surrounded by amazing teachers in a school system with guitar education. I started playing guitar in 7th grade under the instruction of Dr. Adam Kossler, Mr. Hart Wells at Potomac Falls High School. and Julian Gray, of Shenandoah University where I earned my Bachelors in Music Education, summa cum laude.

As a former music education major, I had the opportunity to find myself in different teaching positions. From elementary school ukulele students to high school guitar players, I have experience teaching a variety of instruments, students, and styles. Though my teaching journey began in 2015, where I would teach short lessons at my old middle school as a sophomore in high school. Teaching music has been a passion of mine since I picked up the instrument, so I attended multiple masterclasses to observe a variety of teaching methods. Using the knowledge acquired over my career, I have developed my own personal style of teaching that has proven successful in many different students.

Amongst teaching classical guitar, I also have a background in performing. In 2019 I was invited to join the United States Guitar Orchestra on tour, starting at Carnegie Hall in New York and ending in the beautiful country of France--my first time traveling overseas! I had a competitive side to guitar performing as well, winning several 1st prizes across the East coast as a soloist and in a small ensemble.

My passion is to help others find their musical voice. I was not able to do this without the inspiration and encouragement from my very first guitar teacher, Dr. Adam Kossler, who has not only helped me gained confidence in my playing but in myself. I want my students to feel confident in themselves, discover the creativity they naturally have, and take their musical knowledge into the real world.

Every student is welcome in my classroom.

Johanna Horn, MMT, MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified)
M.Ed, Masters of Music Education (in progress)

MMT, Masters of Music Therapy, 2019

BMT, Bachelors of Music Therapy, 2007

My name is Johanna Horn and I am excited to provide lessons with Laman School of Music.
I am a classically trained vocalist, a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC), and a music educator. Singing is my passion and I am passionate about students finding their voices through singing.  Singing is not only a musical expression, but it is communication and it is story telling.  I believe that through song, the greatest stories are told.

I am a full-time music therapist in Fairfax County Public Schools, where I use singing as a skill to strengthen and support communication.

I attended Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia where I received my Bachelors of Music Therapy with voice as my instrument.  There I also learned guitar and piano- both instruments that I am proficient in.  After passing the Certification Board for Music Therapists and acquiring the MT-BC credential, I worked in schools for neurodivergent students as well as providing music in an early childhood center.

I went back to school at Shenandoah University for my Masters of Music Therapy and graduated in December of 2019.  My research was published in the Music Therapy Perspectives journal and is titled Music Therapy for Hospitalized Antepartum Patients: a Mixed Methods Study.
I am currently attending Berklee College of Music for a second Master’s degree in Music Education (Autism Concentration).

I am excited to share my passion and knowledge of singing with Laman School of Music.
